Santorini Villages: Pyrgos



Pyrgos was the capital of Santorini until 1800, was built on top of a hill and is composed of traditional houses that are situated around the existing Venetian castle, while the small streets follow the shape of the hill.

As you ascend through the square towards the castle of Pyrgos, the stone houses become more dense and the streets are more like a maze made to torture the tourists because they do not know which way to go.

Pyrgos has about 33 churches, but the most famous is the Monastery of Profitis Ilias. Although Pyrgos is a lovely place and one of the most beautiful places on the island, was only recently that has earned a place on the tourist map, to be known for the famous Holy week that began several years ago by his lieutenant mayor.

What you should see:

The Church of the Holy Trinity was built in the traditional style. Located in the village of Pyrgos, houses a small museum with Byzantine icons and ecclesiastical garments.

The monastery of Prophet Elias is the highest peak of Santorini, at an altitude of 565m. It is an excellent destination for hiking and has a magnificent view of the island. It also houses a small ecclesiastical museum.

Kasteli Castle, situated in the center of Pyrgos, was built in medieval times. Some of the walls of the castle survive today.

Santo wine list offers an interesting journey in the process of winemaking in Santorini. From the balcony, visitors can get a magnificent view of the Caldera. Often the ceremonies are held in the balcony. In Santo wines, visitors can taste and buy the island’s traditional products, like wine, cherry tomatoes and capers.
